  我們今天要講的幾個習慣用語表示同一種社會行為: 為了社交或開展業(yè)務的需要而與他人交際。我們要學的第一個習慣用法是: hobnob with。Hobnob不是個新詞。它在四百來年前就已經(jīng)有了。當初的意思是和他人開懷對飲,但是現(xiàn)在hobnob with這個習慣用語的意義廣泛多了,不只是喝酒,也可以指跟好朋友一起談心,看電影或者吃飯等等,總之是進行各種密切交往的活動,包括那些不拘禮的非正式的交往活動。例如:

  例句-1:We’re out all the time but most of it is just business. But I save time to hobnob with my old classmates: we try to get together every Tuesday night for dinner and a few drinks.

  我們經(jīng)常在外面交際,但多半是業(yè)務方面的應酬。但是我還是盡量擠出時間來跟老同學碰碰頭。我們每星期二晚上見面,一起吃飯并喝上幾杯。

  年輕人一般不大用hobnob with這個說法。他們往往使用一個更新穎的習慣用語: hang out with。Hang out with意思其實跟hobnob with差不多,也是指跟人碰頭聚會,只是比較時新,更合年輕人的口味。例如:

  例句-2:Bill, there’s nothing else to do tonight, so I think I’ll go to McDonald’s for a burger and a coke and hang out with a couple of English majors I know.

  再學個也表示交往相聚的習慣用語: schmooze with。Schmooze這個詞來自依地語,也就是猶太人使用的國際語言。十九世紀到美國來的猶太裔移民把這個詞帶進了美國。在依地語中schmooze解釋為“傳聞,” 其實這正恰如其分地表現(xiàn)了英語中schmooze這個詞的含義,因為英語schmooze with表示悠閑地跟人聊天,而且往往是說長道短,傳播最新消息的意思。例如:

  例句-3:Yes, Uncle Milt was the best there was. His customers loved to see him walk in. He’d sit and smoke a cigar, schmooze for an hour and walk out with bigger orders than anybody else.
